Medicago sativa, is a plant originally native to Asia, but now is found growing abundantly throughout the world. Alfalfa belongs to the Fabaceae family, the pea family. Alfalfa contains isoflavones, coumarins, sterols, and is rich in enzymes including amylase, lipase and protase, it contains Vitamin A, C, D, B6, and vitamin K and is said to contain 10 times more mineral value than the average grain. (4) Alfalfa is known as the “Queen of Forages,” as she is the world's most important and widely grown forage legume. Alfalfa, rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals, provides highly nutritious hay and pasture for animal and dairy production. (1)
